Beach Location and Access

The dog beach sits at the north end of Montrose Beach, on the North Side lakefront inside Lincoln Park. The Park District lists the dog area at 601 W Montrose Ave and gives its size as 3.83 acres. The main beach address is 4400 N. Jean-Baptiste Pointe DuSable Lake Shore Drive.

Parking at Montrose Beach is pay-and-display, plus street parking. Expect spaces to fill fast on warm summer weekends.

The Park District lists CTA bus routes 78 Montrose, 81 Lawrence and 151 Sheridan, plus the Lawrence and Wilson Red Line stations. But CTA only allows animals in a closed carrier small enough to fit under a seat, plus service animals. A bigger dog will need a car or a walk along the lakefront.

Beach Rules and Regulations

The beach is a Chicago Park District Dog Friendly Area (DFA), so every dog needs a current DFA permit and tag. The Park District charges $10 per dog, and each tag runs from January 1 to December 31.

Tags are sold only through participating Chicagoland vets. To get one, you’ll need:

• A current City of Chicago dog license or proof of a current rabies vaccination.
• Written proof of a fecal test for parasites.
• Proof of vaccination for distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvovirus, bordetella and leptospirosis.
• A signed agreement to follow the DFA rules.

Visitors from out of state can contact a participating vet, or have their own vet buy the tag from the Park District at 312-742-4687. There are no day passes, so sort this out before your trip.

Chicago residents also need a city dog license, sold by the City Clerk, for any dog four months or older.

Once you’re inside, the Park District’s DFA rules include:

• Keep your dog leashed on the way in and out, and supervise it at all times.
• No more than three dogs per person.
• No puppies under four months and no females in heat.
• No food, for people or dogs.
• Children under 12 need adult supervision.

Seasonal Hours and Restrictions

The Park District lists Montrose Beach as open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. It doesn’t post separate hours for the dog area, but MonDog, the volunteer group that supports the dog beach, gives the same hours.

Dogs must stay inside the posted dog area all year. Chicago’s municipal code only allows dogs on beach areas designated and posted for dogs. Elsewhere, the Park District’s beach rule is simple: “No dogs on the beach.”

What to Expect at the Beach

The dog area gives dogs direct access to Lake Michigan from a sandy beach. At 3.83 acres, it’s far bigger than a typical Chicago DFA. Wiggly Field, in the Lincoln Park neighborhood, is well under half an acre.

Beach season runs from the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day, with lifeguards on the swim areas from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Park District flags each beach green, yellow or red. Flags update around 11 a.m. for weather and surf, and around 1:30 p.m. for water quality.

The flags are for swimmers, but a water-quality red flag is a good reason to keep your dog’s swim short.

Amenities and Facilities

The Park District lists food concessions, showers and restrooms at Montrose Beach, along with kayak and volleyball rentals. These are listed for the beach as a whole, not the dog area. Bring fresh water and a bowl, as the official listing doesn’t mention a dog drinking fountain here.

Nearby Attractions and Services

The Lakefront Trail passes the beach. Its 18.5-mile pedestrian trail runs from Ardmore Avenue to 71st Street, separate from the bike trail. City code requires a leash of six feet or less in parks.

Skip Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary and the Montrose Beach Dunes Natural Area next door. Both are Park District natural areas, where pets aren’t allowed, even on a leash.
