Challenger Park dog park is a small Chicago Park District dog area at 1100 W. Irving Park Rd. in Uptown, squeezed between the elevated Red Line tracks and the wall of Graceland Cemetery. At 0.08 acres it suits a quick off-leash break for neighborhood dogs rather than a long run, and the Sheridan Red Line station is just south of Irving Park Road.

What the Challenger Park dog park is like
The Park District lists the dog area as 0.08 acres, “located east of elevated tracks and playground,” with a doggie drinking fountain. That makes it one of the smaller dog areas in the city, so expect a compact pen rather than room for full sprints.
Locals know it as “Challenger Bark,” according to the Buena Circle & Challenger Parks Advisory Council. Buena Park Neighbors, the local neighborhood group, describes it as a small park with some shade, a doggie drinking fountain and a seasonal doggy pool.
The dog area has moved once. The advisory council’s timeline says it was created in 2002–2003, and that in 2009 its boundaries “shifted towards cemetery wall and further away from the CTA track.” If you visited years ago and remember it right against the tracks, that is why it feels different now.
Like every Chicago Park District dog area, it needs a DFA permit tag for each dog; our Chicago city guide explains how to get one.
A long, thin park named for the shuttle crew
Challenger Park is a 3.86-acre strip in the Uptown community area. The advisory council says it runs from Irving Park Road north toward Montrose, on the opposite side of the ‘L’ tracks from Buena Circle Park. To the east, the park abuts Graceland Cemetery.
The park dates to a public-private partnership started in 1990. The Park District says the 1991 project “transformed the half-mile stretch of land into a linear park with native trees, grasses, wildflowers, jogging and walking paths, new sewers, lighting, and a new alley.” It was named in memory of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster of January 28, 1986.
That linear layout is the useful part for dog owners. Once your dog has had its off-leash time, the park’s paths give you a leashed walk away from the traffic on Irving Park Road. The advisory council describes a passive nature area with a worn path on the north side of the park, and says that path was restored in 2025 during a volunteer “Chip in for Challenger” event.
Getting there and parking
- ‘L’: the CTA Sheridan station (Red Line) is at 3940 N. Sheridan Rd., just south of Irving Park Road, the park’s southern end.
- Bus: the Sheridan station lists connections to the #X9, #80 Irving Park and #151 buses.
- Car: the park has a parking lot on its southern edge. The advisory council notes that the lot is leased to the Cubs for Wrigley Field events, so expect it to be busy or unavailable on Wrigley event days. The Park District also lists commuter parking for rent at the park.
If you plan to bring your dog on the train, check the CTA pet rules in our city guide first.
