Belmont Harbor dog beach is a small, fenced off-leash dog area on Chicago’s lakefront, east of Lake Shore Drive at the north end of Belmont Harbor. The Chicago Park District calls it the Belmont Harbor Dog Friendly Area and lists it at just 0.15 acres, so it is a good stop on a lakefront walk rather than a place for a long beach day.

Is it really a beach?
Many maps and listings call this spot a dog beach, and WGN-TV’s guide to dogs on Chicago beaches for the 2025 season lists it as the “Belmont Harbor Dog Beach,” describing it as a fully fenced area for off-leash play. The Park District itself calls it a Dog Friendly Area and does not describe the surface or any water access.
We could not find an official source confirming whether the area is sand or whether dogs can go into the harbor from it, so we have left those details out. If a swim is the main reason for your trip, check on arrival. Dogs are not allowed on Chicago’s general public beaches, so stay inside the dog area; our Chicago city guide has the permit and beach rules.
What a visit is like, according to reviewers
Google reviews read in September 2026 cover what the Park District does not. Reviewers consistently describe sand and direct access to the lake, with dogs running in and out of the water. They call it small, and most say it is usually quieter than other dog areas, with a mostly local crowd, though one found it crowded. Several describe the harbor water as calm and shallow, which they say suits small dogs and first-time swimmers.
The entrance is the common complaint. Reviewers variously describe an awkward gate on a narrow ledge with a big step down to the sand, and an entry that ends in the water, so dogs may have to jump or wade in. That can be hard for large, older or water-shy dogs.
One reviewer noted there is no tap water or bags, so bring your own, and suggested Montrose if your dog would rather lounge than fetch and swim. One recent visitor also reported a new self-serve dog wash across the path from the entrance; we have not confirmed it.
Belmont Harbor dog beach vs. Montrose Dog Beach
The two lakefront dog areas are both in Lincoln Park, but they are very different in size. The Park District lists the Montrose Dog Beach at 3.83 acres at the north end of Montrose Beach, more than 25 times the size of the Belmont Harbor area. If your dog needs space to run, Montrose, roughly a mile and a half north along the lakefront by the street grid, is the bigger option. Belmont Harbor suits a shorter off-leash break close to Lakeview.
About Belmont Harbor
Belmont Harbor is one of 10 harbors the Chicago Park District operates along the city’s lakefront, and the harbor season runs from May 1 to October 31. Chicago Harbors describes it as “one of the largest harbors in the Chicago Harbors system,” with 818 slips, mooring cans and star docks for boats from 28 to more than 80 feet long.
The harbor is home to several yacht clubs, including the Chicago Yacht Club’s Belmont Station and the Belmont Yacht Club. Chicago Harbors notes that it is “surrounded by acres of park space and a beautiful skyline view to the south.”
The harbor sits inside Lincoln Park, which the Park District says covers 1,188.62 acres along the lakefront from Ohio Street Beach north to Ardmore Avenue. The Lakefront Trail, which runs from Ardmore Avenue to 71st Street, passes along this stretch of shore, so you can combine a leashed walk on the pedestrian trail with a stop at the dog area.
